How about dining in one of Dublin’s historic banks? That’s the promise of Bank on College Green, a Dublin restaurant that has taken up residence in a former bank dating back to 1892. This atypical and unusual venue promises to provide you with a dining experience dripping with decadence, with its vaulted ceilings, imposing columns and gilded staircases! A pure marvel!
If you love places steeped in history, bathed in an elegant, chic atmosphere, then “The Bank” is the restaurant for you!
The restaurant took up residence in a historic former bank in 2003. It was founded in 1892 by the Belfast Bank, and its décor dates from the same period.
The interior is impressive, in pure Victorian style. The whole thing drips with glitz, chic and elegance. At the time, the decoration cost over £8,000: a real fortune in the 1890s, but one that seemed necessary to establish the credibility of the Belfast Bank in Dublin.
The exterior architecture is of Franco-Scottish inspiration, built in Scottish sandstone. In fact, it’s the only building in Dublin to use this type of stone!
Inside, the bank’s main hall is breathtaking, with its stained-glass ceiling, mosaic floors and hand-carved plasterwork and cornices. The lower floor also features magnificent vaulted ceilings and historic Chatwood safes.
In 2003, the premises were bought out and turned into a restaurant. Irish-inspired bistro-style cuisine, including seafood chowder, fish and chips, burgers, seafood tagliatelle…
The dishes are masterfully prepared using local produce. The dishes are sophisticated yet simple, and perfectly match the spirit of the place. Expect to pay between €20 and €30 per person for a main course. All this is served in an exceptional setting, with a warm and professional team who always have a smile and the little attention that makes their customers happy.
An excellent address, as atypical as The Church, another Dublin restaurant, which allows you to eat in a former church!
