The majestic Cliffs of Moher, an unmissable gem of Ireland’s west coast, are undergoing a safety upgrade to their coastal trails in 2025. This news has understandably worried more than a few travelers… But here’s the good news: the site remains fully visitable and just as spectacular — you just need to adjust your itinerary slightly. In this article, we explain what’s changing, what’s still accessible, and what great alternatives you can consider to keep your visit breathtaking.

What’s closed in 2025: southern and northern trails partially shut

The southern section, between Liscannor and Hags Head

Since February 2025, the southern stretch of the coastal trail, linking Liscannor to Hags Head (roughly 6 kilometers), has been completely closed to the public. Authorities made this decision because of the dangerous nature of the path, which runs directly along the cliff edge with little protection.

The northern section, near Doolin

The northern part of the trail, about one kilometer around Doolin, is also closed or restricted. This limitation affects direct coastal access to the Visitor Centre for those hiking in from Doolin.

Why these closures?

These measures are part of a larger project to improve the site’s safety. Throughout 2025, crews are redefining some routes, installing barriers, and relocating sections to safer areas. No exact reopening date has been announced yet, but a wide-ranging plan called the Cliffs of Moher 2040 Strategy is underway to ensure a safer and more sustainable visitor experience for the future.

The good news: the heart of the cliffs is still open!

The “Cliffs of Moher Experience” remains 100% accessible

The closures only affect peripheral trail sections. The core of the site — the Cliffs of Moher Experience with its secure viewing platforms — remains fully open. You can still take in the vertiginous panoramas from the iconic viewpoints, enjoy the Visitor Centre exhibits, and experience the magic of the cliffs safely.

Boat tours for a fresh perspective

Looking to mix it up? Board a boat in Doolin for a cruise at the foot of the cliffs. From the sea, the Cliffs offer an even more dramatic view — and as a bonus, you can extend your adventure to the Aran Islands.

Other equally spectacular cliffs

For hikers in search of adventure and wilder trails, Ireland has no shortage of options! You can explore the towering Slieve League cliffs in Donegal, discover the Kerry Cliffs further south, or walk the beautiful Sheep’s Head Lighthouse Loop in Cork.

Practical tips for your visit

To make the most of your trip to the Cliffs in 2025, stick to the secure paths around the Visitor Centre and consider booking your boat tours or guided walks in advance, especially in peak season. Keep an eye on official updates from the Cliffs of Moher website or announcements from the Clare County Council, so you can adjust your plans as needed.
