Adam Clayton was born in Chinnor, England, on March 13, 1960. His father, Brian, is an Irish Royal Air Force pilot, while his mother, Jo Clayton, is a stay-at-home mom. They spent their early years in Kenya, before moving to Dublin in 1965.

Adam Clayton had an eventful childhood there. A protestor and hippy on the edge, he seems to have lost all interest in school, in favor of music. His parents gave him a bass in 1974, and the young boy spent all his time on his instrument.

He was inspired by artists such as Paul McCartney of The Beatles, John Entwistle of The Who, Bob Marley, Joy Division and Kraftwerk.

At the same time, he studied at Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin. It was here that he met the future members of U2: Paul Hewson (Bono), The Edge and Larry Mullen Jr. At that time, Larry Mullen Jr. posted a classified ad on the walls of the high school: he wanted to form a band and was looking for musicians.

Adam Clayton initially ignores the announcement, convinced that the school is behind it all… But he soon realized that it was coming from high school students. He shows up for the appointment, and taps in at 60 Rosamount Avenue in Dublin, home of Larry Mullen Jr. He auditioned and landed the job of bassist, marking the beginning of the most famous Irish band of all time!

From the very first musical performances, Adam Clayton was inspired and particularly enthusiastic! Convinced of the band’s talent, he improvised as a manager, and organized numerous live shows in small Dublin clubs…

The quartet is a hit: its inspiring, committed songs quickly win over the public. It’s a skilful blend of rock and emotional lyrics, denouncing the poverty of Dublin, the lack of prospects for the future, the quest for spirituality…etc.

Things quickly took off in Dublin, and in 1978, Clayton gave up his role as manager in favour of Paul Mc Guinness, who took charge.

By 1980, the band had attracted the attention of Island Records. The opportunity to sign a debut album, “Boy”, which is selling like hotcakes!

From then on, one thing led to another. The band multiplies albums and international tours. U2 becomes a top rock band that everyone wants to be a part of.

However, the real turning point for U2 came with their album “The Joshua Tree” in 1987, which was a major commercial success.

In 1989, he was arrested in Dublin for possession of marijuana. He made the headlines. For U2, it’s a scandal, but the other members of the band show solidarity and support for their friend.

On trial, he narrowly escaped conviction by donating to charity.

However, his addiction led him to miss a concert in Sydney in 1993. This was the one and only concert where the band was unable to perform with its full line-up.

A few months later, something clicked. Adam Clayton decides to seek treatment and leaves for a cure.

Since then, he has spoken openly about his recovery and taken part in numerous drug awareness campaigns.
