Two tragic episodes, testimony to the centuries-old Anglo-Irish conflict
Events that have forever marked Irish society
Tensions between England and Ireland have existed for centuries… and have caused dramatic events up to the 20th century. Between territorial wars, political and economic stakes, the United Kingdom has never ceased to impose its presence on Irish soil… Leading throughout history to terrible fights, wars, and outbreaks, with Irish independence opponents clashing with British imperialists.
This has given rise to two sadly famous moments in Irish history: both are known as Bloody Sunday.
The first episode took place in 1920 at the famous Croke Park stadium (where Black and Tans deliberately opened fire on the crowd attending the match). The second occurred on January 30, 1972, in Londonderry: British military troops opened fire on peaceful and unarmed protesters.
These actions deeply shocked international opinion and further entrenched the hardened positions within both camps.
