Halloween is coming soon! And Ireland has every intention of celebrating! This festival has Irish origins, and was formerly known by another, more Gaelic name: Samain!

Celebrating Samain in Ireland

A whole program of festivities!

To mark the occasion, the country always organizes numerous festivals, and puts on some lovely traditions! Here’s what you don’t want to miss!

  • The Bram Stoker Festival : if you love vampire stories, and Bram Stoker’s famous novel “Dracula”, then this is the festival for you! Held in Dublin, this festival is sure to send shivers down your spine, with horror film screenings, concerts, and edifying gastronomic experiences!
  • Colcannon: a typical Irish dish, eaten on Halloween. Traditionally, a coin is hidden in the mashed potatoes: whoever finds it on their plate will be lucky for the next few days!
  • Barm Brack is another of Ireland’s Halloween culinary specialties. It’s a kind of cake filled with raisins. Very simple to make, it’s important to observe a tradition before serving: a ring and a penny are hidden in the dough, a little like the bean in a galette des rois.

Last but not least, don’t be surprised if you come across a large number of street parades! Even the kids dress up and go door-to-door asking for candy!
