But his crowning achievement came in June 2017, when he was elected Taoiseach until 2020, before taking up the same post again in 2022.
Highly respected, his appointment in 2017 as Prime Minister set Ireland on a true political and cultural course, with Leo Varadkar becoming Ireland’s youngest and first openly gay head of government (a first in such a Catholic country!).
His appointment as Taoiseach was also significant because of his Indian heritage, making him the first Irish head of government of Asian descent.
