1923, on the fictional island of Inisherin in Ireland. Two friends, Padraic and Colm, live a peaceful existence on an island off the coast of Ireland… while the country is torn apart by a terrible Civil War…

All is well until Colm decides, without explanation, to end his friendship with Padraic. A choice that Padraic doesn’t share, and who will do everything in his power to understand what he’s been accused of, and to reconcile with his former friend… But his repeated efforts are in vain, pushing Colm into a corner… until the day when, exasperated, Colm makes a dramatic ultimatum to his friend…

A situation that will escalate to unimaginable extremes…

Our opinion

A critically acclaimed film that highlights a wild Ireland, full of contrasts!

Martin McDonagh’s film is both powerful and intimate. A film that tells the story of a friendship brutally interrupted, against the backdrop of the fratricidal Irish civil war… A kind of effective mise en abîmes that resonates with the breathtaking wilderness of Ireland!

Although the story is supposed to take place on the fictional island of Inisherin, it was actually filmed on two incredible Irish islands:Achill Island andInishmore Island, considered to be veritable bastions of wilderness, preserved by centuries of tradition and respect for mankind.

In this way, the film’s strength and atmosphere are conveyed through exceptional images! On the menu: lush green stretches criss-crossed by low dry-stone walls, rugged ocean landscapes, sandy beaches and breathtaking cliffs! We discover the Ireland of yesteryear. A profoundly rural Ireland, with its cottages without comforts, its life in slow motion, punctuated by the climate and the ocean… not to mention the island’s isolation, with the mentality that goes with it, made up of gossip and boredom.

A perfect setting for the story of two Irishmen’s broken friendship… And what Irishmen! Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson deliver a first-rate duet, playing the complex relationship card to the hilt and keeping viewers on the edge of their seats right to the end! Special mention must also go to Barry Keoghan, who plays a most endearing supporting role!

The tone alternates between seriousness and wry humor. Colin Farrell plays the slightly naive Irish gentleman to perfection, while Brendan Gleeson intrigues with his pensive silences and his ability to reach inexplicable, unhealthy extremes.
