We can see you coming… What? Guinness? With milk and vanilla ice cream? All in a milkshake? What’s wrong with you?

So yes, at first glance, the association may seem a little far-fetched. But we advise you to open your mind and your taste buds, because your preconceived ideas may well lead you to miss out on an astonishing beverage!

Because even though the Irish tend to use Guinness in cooking, with anything and everything, they’re often proven right! This success is due to the use of a unique and original dark beer, which offers a taste that’s always balanced between sweetness and bitterness. To put it plainly: it goes perfectly with most traditional Irish recipes, whether sweet or savoury!

After conquering hearts with Guinness ice cream (another inspired recipe!), the Irish invented the dark beer milkshake! It’s a frozen drink made from vanilla ice cream, milk… and Arthur Guinness’s famous Irish beer! Basic ingredients, typical of all milkshake recipes (and Guinness too!).

The whole thing is then topped with whipped cream and toppers (chocolate decorations, dashes of liquid caramel, wafer fans…etc.) for added indulgence! Simple, but you should have thought of it!

Taste of Guinness milkshake

In terms of taste, you’ll get an ice cream with perfectly balanced flavors, combining coffee, vanilla and caramel aromas! The bitterness of the dark beer is broken by the sweetness of the vanilla and the softness of the milk. There’s plenty to enjoy and refresh you, especially in hot weather!

Not all Irish pubs offer them, but it’s more common to see them served during the summer months by daring ice cream parlors. A milkshake costs around €7, depending on the store where you order it. This type of milkshake is usually in high demand: expect to queue!

A word of warning: this milkshake may look like a snack, but it’s still an alcoholic beverage. Consume in moderation, as the sugar in vanilla ice cream could well accelerate the effects of alcohol on your body! Drink in moderation… and above all: not for children!
