Shamrock-shaped cookies for St. Patrick’s Day!

If you like gourmet and original cookies, then you’ll love Irish cookies! These are not made with chocolate but with raisins and cumin. An atypical alliance that promises a veritable explosion on the palate!

These cookies are usually baked for St. Patrick’s Day, and can even be shaped like shamrocks. They can even be covered with green icing to add a festive touch! It’s all a question of imagination, creativity… and, of course, bright green colorant!

Delicate and gourmet, they are generally enjoyed by the whole family all year round, and especially on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17 each year)!

You’ll find them in local pastry shops and some food stores. But let’s face it: it’s much more fun to make them yourself!

They can be round or any other shape. It’s all about the moulds you buy! Don’t hesitate to spice them up like a cupcake once they’re out of the oven: chocolate sprinkles, icing, almonds, hazelnuts… Be creative and have fun!

Recipe: Irish soda bread cookies

Ingredients

  • 250g flour
  • 180g sugar
  • 40g green-coloured sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 110g butter
  • 80g raisins
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 egg
  • 60ml Buttermilk (alternatively, cream or milk)

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 180 degrees, and prepare a baking tray with buttered parchment paper.
  • Mix the flour, bicarbonate, sugar, salt, softened butter and raisins in a bowl.
  • Knead by hand until the dough resembles shortbread.
  • Add the cumin, egg and buttermilk.
  • Mix with a spoon until you obtain a smooth, slightly compact paste.
  • All that’s left to do is roll out the dough and shape the cookies with cookie cutters (rounds or shamrocks, for example).
  • Sprinkle with green coloured sugar
  • Place your cookies on the baking sheet and bake for 12 minutes until golden brown. Don’t be surprised if the cookies seem soft when you take them out: they will solidify and become crunchy within minutes of being placed in the open air.
  • Enjoy your meal!
