Portavogie prawns are a Northern Irish specialty. These are shrimps, caught specifically in the village of Portavogie in County Down. It has to be said that the village is renowned throughout Ireland for its waters, which are ideal for seafood! As a result, these little shrimps are being exported all over the island: restaurants are snapping them up, and understandably so!
Portavogie shrimp have a reputation for being fine and delicious. Their tender, pink flesh is perfect for salads or hot dishes. These are delicate, and offer very pleasant, subtly iodized flavours.
Many restaurants specializing in fish, shellfish and other seafood in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland offer this dish on their menus. The mere mention of it is a guarantee of quality and taste.
Chefs love to work with it, as do Irish households, who use it in salads and prawn cocktails.
In terms of price, it’s quite affordable: you can easily find it on fish stalls throughout the country, especially in the food markets of the big cities (notably Belfast, Dublin and Cork).
