Kylemore Abbey and its castle were lit up in green last night, to celebrate the centenary of the Benedictine order in Ireland. A long-awaited anniversary, which merited one of Connemara’s most beautiful sites being chosen for the occasion! And what could be better than Kylemore Abbey and Kylemore Castle, which have been occupied for over a century by Benedictine nuns entirely devoted to the site?

Kylemore Abbey and its castle will be lit up in green every night for a year…

A way to celebrate the centenary of the Benedictine monks who occupy the site

One year… Connemara Abbey and Kylemore Castle will be lit up in green every evening for the whole of 2020. A way of consecrating the history of the Benedictine order, but also of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day at the same time, which takes place next week.

A way of killing two birds with one stone and paying tribute to Irish Christian history.

And it’s already a magnificent sight: Kylemore Abbey is visible at night for miles around, in the Irish wilderness of Connemara. It can be seen from the magnificent Pollacappul Lough all the way to the Connemara hills. A grandiose, supernatural view!

So 2020 will be a very special year for Kylemore Abbey. A true invitation to visit for travelers, who will discover the abbey’s history, visit the main halls of Kylemore Castle a few hundred meters away, and explore its fabulous gardens!

For a century, our Benedictine sisters lived at the heart of Kylemore Abbey. At the heart of our Benedictine philosophy is the concept of “ora et labora” – prayer and work. During this year, we will remember all those who have helped make Kylemore Abbey such a special place – our sisters in faith; the many employees – past and present – who have worked with us; our community elders and friends and benefactors; as we also remember that our ancestors began their mission in Connemara as refugees from the horrors of war. said Abbess and President of the Kylemore Trust, Mother Máire Hickey.

One thing’s for sure: Kylemore Abbey is going to draw a crowd this year… even more than usual!
