It’s an Irish tradition: every year, the bravest Irish start the New Year with a dip in the Atlantic Ocean or the Irish Sea. It’s a great way to rejuvenate and celebrate new beginnings in a cheerful, joyful atmosphere (and maybe even recover from a hangover!)!

Swimmers of all ages gathered at various spots all over Ireland: Sandycove Harbour in Dublin, Bray in County Wicklow, Achill Island in County Mayo, Carnlough Harbour in County Antrim, Crawfordsburn Beach in County Down…etc. Fundraising events have even been organized for medical and political causes.

The Dubliners took a dip in Dublin’s Sandycove with former international rugby star Shane Byrne, to raise funds for Irish mental health charity Cycle Against Suicide.

Meanwhile, over 1,000 people gathered for a charity evening on Achill Island, West Ireland, as part of a day of campaigning to protect local beaches, while Fianna Fail political party leader Micheal Martin took a cold dip at Broadstrand, Courtmacsherry, West Cork to campaign for the RNLI service, a sea rescue service.

Hundreds of people also turned out for swimming events in Bray, County Wicklow.

Wherever they came from, participants in these events were all dressed up for the occasion: Santa Claus outfits, kilts, St. Patrick’s costumes, eccentric swimsuits and other colorful festive attire!

With average temperatures of around 9.6°C, participants didn’t hesitate for a second to get wet in the icy waters! This great courage was rewarded with prizes, medals and a hot drink from the event organizers!
