It’s a very ambitious project: Ireland’s famous Midleton distillery is to be completely transformed into Ireland’s most iconic Irish whiskey attraction! A project costing almost 13 million euros, it will offer future visitors a multi-sensory experience, including new interactive tours and unique tasting experiences.

It’s official: the Irish Distillers group has just announced the renovation of the Midleton distillery in County Cork, transforming the tourist attraction into a world-class whisky destination capable of attracting up to 200,000 visitors every year!

To achieve this, a 250 million euro investment plan has been agreed. Work is due to start in early 2023 and be completed by 2025… coinciding with the distillery’s 200th anniversary.

The Midleton distillery is already world-famous for producing several famous Irish whiskies, including Jameson, Powers, Redbreast and Midleton Very Rare.

The transformation of the plant should enable the distillery to equip itself with state-of-the-art whiskey production technology. The project also plans to create new stores, bars and restaurants, while tours will give visitors a whole new experience! The program includes an immersion in the history of Irish whiskey, the discovery of centuries-old manufacturing processes, and a total immersion in olfactory and gustatory experiences… The exhibits will be grandiose and outrageous!

The redevelopment of the building also aims to make ecology a central concern. The distillery will use responsible, sustainable technologies, including a heat recovery system, which will enable the heat generated by the whiskey distillery to be used to heat all parts of the building.

This heat recovery system will reduce carbon emissions by around 200,000 kg of Co2 each year. A huge number!

The distillery also plans to replace almost 1,000 light bulbs with LED lamps, guaranteeing a 90% reduction in electricity consumption compared with existing levels.

Irish Distillers CEO Conor McQuaid has said that the development will bring whisky lovers closer than ever to the production process.

At Irish Distillers, we’re always looking to the future of Irish whiskey, which is why we’re delighted to announce our plans for the redevelopment of the Midleton distillery,” said McQuaid in a statement.
These exciting projects will guarantee visitors a unique insight into the whiskies produced at the Midleton distillery in an exceptionally beautiful and attractive setting. We are confident that we can continue to build on the distillery’s appeal to national and international visitors.

A distillery that plans to welcome the public during the works

Important information for travellers who still want to visit the distillery: it plans to remain open despite the work! Guided tours will continue in a brand-new building built especially for the occasion…

A smooth transition for Irish whiskey lovers, who can continue to discover the triple distillation processes of Jameson and other similar beverages… while they wait for the brand new attraction!

For the rest, we’ll have to wait until 2025… We’ll have to be patient, but one thing’s for sure: this attraction promises to be grandiose, in the same spirit as Dublin’s Guinness Storehouse!
