Baltimore Castle(Dún na Séad Castle in Gaelic) is a historic jewel on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Built in the village of Baltimore in West Cork, it dates back to the 12th century and was originally constructed by the Normans. Rich in history, it offers a magnificent glimpse into medieval Irish history. A fascinating place, a must-see!
Baltimore Castle traces its origins back to 1215, when Norman settlers decided to build a private tower house. The architecture is colossal and typical of the Anglo-Norman style of the period.
Over time, the building passed from one hand to the next, with successive owners well known to history. But above all, it was to become a hotbed of Irish piracy.
Indeed, the castle will witness the famous sacking of Baltimore in 1631, the first and only pirate raid on Irish soil. In addition, thehe château will belong to the O’Driscolls, one of Ireland’s most notorious seafaring clans. The latter were known for their numerous acts of piracy in Irish waters, using Baltimore Castle as their headquarters.
After this period, the building changed hands several times… until it became the property of the Spanish crown… and then the British! Cromwell’s troops seized the castle to house their garrisons and better contain the Irish rebels…
During the Rebellion of 1798, the castle was used as a strategic position by British forces to suppress Irish rebellions. Later, in 1920, the castle was the site of a bloody battle between British and Irish forces during the Irish War of Independence.
The château has also been the venue for numerous parties and social gatherings over the centuries. It has played host to famous personalities such as Queen Victoria and the poet WB Yeats.
After these major episodes, Baltimore Castle was finally abandoned and remained so for decades. Inside, the château is falling into disrepair: some walls are in danger of collapsing, and vegetation is taking over the premises.
The château was finally bought in 1997 by Patrick and Bernie McCarthy, two enthusiasts who decided to undertake a colossal restoration project. Their goal: to restore the original château and make it their home, while opening certain rooms to the public. It took them nearly 8 years to restore it to its former glory… and to its former glory.
Since then, Baltimore Castle has been open to the public and can also be used as a wedding reception venue! After paying the entrance fee, you can explore the building, its architecture and its history.
In particular, you’ll enter the great hall on the second floor, which contains furniture, tapestries and a historical description of the castle’s 800-year history.
