Carrickkildavnet Castle is a 15th-century fortified castle built near the village of Carrickkildavnet in County Mayo. This magnificent Anglo-Norman fortified tower faces the sea and Achill Sound. A magnificent place!
Carrickkildavnet Castle is often attributed to Irish pirate Grace O’Malley. However, the building is thought to have been constructed by his ancestors around 1429. Because of its strategic location, the castle was one of the pirate’s strongholds: very useful, it enabled surveillance of the Irish west coast, and thus better control of maritime traffic and the passage linking Clew Bay to Blacksod Bay.
In a remarkable state of repair, the château stands 12 metres high, spread over 3 levels. It features a dungeon, bedrooms and a traditional vaulted ceiling. You can approach the castle, but not visit it (it’s closed to the public). A pity, but a simple glimpse of its exterior should be able to console you and help you cope with the frustration!
