The Clare Island Lighthouse is a pretty Irish lighthouse standing guard at the entrance to Clew Bay. Built on the small island of Clare Island, this lighthouse has been an important maritime landmark for approaching ships for almost 2 centuries. Protecting not only Clare Island, but also Achill Island and Westport, the lighthouse has become a veritable symbol of Clew Bay!
The Clare Island lighthouse is now fully automated. This advantage has enabled the island to focus on a particular tourism project: converting the old lighthouse buildings into full-board accommodation.
The Clare Island lighthouse is set in an exceptional setting, built right into the cliffs overlooking Clew Bay… It offers a sumptuous panorama of the ocean’s fury as it crashes violently against the island’s vertiginous cliffs. It would be a shame to miss out on such a great show!
Built in 1806, the lighthouse has stood watch over boats approaching Achill Island and Wesport for over two centuries. In perfect condition, it has been specially refurbished to offer travellers a unique experience: sleeping in a lighthouse, close to the ocean and its tumultuous activities!
The accommodation is clearly luxury. Here, everything is conducive to calm, rest and peaceful retreat in a setting conducive to escapism! The furnishings are elegant and uncluttered, in keeping with the lighthouse’s antique style.
There are six rooms, each individually decorated with taste and refinement, in a traditional marine style. Rooms are furnished with period fixtures and fittings, cast-iron beds, and furniture reminiscent of the 1800s. Wood-burning stoves, open fires and underfloor heating add to the conviviality and comfort: you’ll enjoy cocooning on the spot, with a plaid over your legs, sipping a cup of tea while reading a good book.
The icing on the cake is the breathtaking ocean view. On a clear day, the waters change every second, modifying the geometry of the waves according to the climate. It’s a fascinating sight to behold: you quickly lose track of time, and the Clare Island Lighthouse seems to transport you somewhere else, away from the World and civilization! What a pleasure!
The area around the lighthouse is perfect for a short hike: you’ll enjoy walking along the coast, admiring the view and breathing in the fresh Irish sea air! A great idea for a family outing that will keep you busy for a few hours, reconnecting you with the wilderness! (Be careful not to get too close to the edge: the cliffs are steep and the wind can be dangerous. Keep children as far away as possible).
Reservations can be made here: www.clareislandlighthouse.com. Don’t hesitate to give it a try: you’ll be living a unique adventure, far removed from traditional and conventional accommodation! Perfect accommodation for wilderness lovers who want to live side by side with the almighty ocean!
Don’t hesitate to approach the lighthouse (even if you’re not a guest of the hotel): you’ll be able to admire its breathtaking view, and taste the joys of the Irish sea air! You’ll discover a gleaming white building, with a black roof that glistens in the sunlight. The lighthouse is in remarkable condition, and is regularly maintained. It’s a fine example of an automated lighthouse in Ireland!
