An Anglo-Norman castle victim of its past

Dundrum Castle is said to have been built by John de Courcy, a wealthy Anglo-Norman who took part in the invasion of Ulster. The building was erected on the ruins of an ancient wooden and earthen castle, to control the territory and city of Newcastle. But in 1203, John de Courcy was expelled from the territory by Hugues de Lacy, and the castle underwent numerous sieges to reconquer it. Recaptured in 1210 by King John, with the help of Hugues de Lacy, Dundrum Castle was improved with the construction of a circular keep and 2 watchtowers, which the fortress had previously lacked.

In the 16th century, the château passed into the hands of the Magennis de Mourne family, before being improved around 1660 with the construction of an L-shaped house to the south-west of the inner courtyard.

Today, this house has been literally destroyed by time.

Touristically speaking, the castle is well worth a visit. Set in beautiful natural surroundings, it has a deep, authentic charm that should charm the most discerning among you. Considered to be one of the finest examples of Anglo-Norman architecture of its time, Dundrum Castle will take you right to the heart of Irish medieval history, and give you a better understanding of the country’s turbulent past.
