A castle belonging to the Roche family

The castle’s history dates back to the 13th century, when a wealthy Anglo-Norman family decided to settle in the Irish village of Glanworth. At this time, the family was influential, extending its power over much of the northern Cork region. Deeply religious, she had a Dominican abbey established in 1475, and a bridge built at the same time. (Glanworth Bridge is famous for being the oldest and narrowest public bridge in Europe!) Since then, the castle, abbey and bridge have coexisted in their ruins. A beautiful show!

Indeed, the castle fell into disuse over the centuries, and is now in a sorry state. It still comprises a round tower, a keep, ramparts and an old square tower raised above the rest of the fortifications. Nevertheless, the castle remains in ruins.

You can admire it for free: the village has created a sort of public park around it, where it’s pleasant to stroll around. It is possible to approach the building, provided you don’t go inside. The site is fabulous, with a charm worthy of Ireland’s greatest castles! The ruins have a lot to do with it!
