Visiter Glenarm Castle.

Glenarm Castle is a “manor house” located in the village of Glenarm in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Imposing, and still in excellent condition, it was known as the ancestral home of the Earls of Antrim.

An elegant manor house!

Records show that a castle existed as early as the 13th century on the site of today’s Glenarm Castle. However, the present castle was built in 1636 by Sir Randal MacDonnell, 1st Earl of Antrim, and is now owned by Randal, Viscount Dunluce, son of Alexander McDonnell, 9th Earl of Antrim. Proof that the château has been passed down from generation to generation!

On the historical side, Glenarm Castle is said to have suffered a terrible fire: the fault of a housekeeper who lit a candle in one of the bedrooms to warm up a cold old parrot (astonishing but true!). The flame then grew, devastating several wings of the mansion.

Now renovated, the château opens its doors to visitors every year between May and September. The current owner has not hesitated to develop his estate in this direction, equipping it with an organic farm and a tea room.

Glenarm Castle is also the venue for the Highland Games, a much-anticipated event held in July. The Dalriada Festival is also held on site: a festival celebrating sport, music and fine cuisine from all over Scotland and Ireland. On the program: concerts, gastronomy and entertainment of all kinds!

Don’t hesitate to take a stroll through the gardens, and admire the château’s architecture: it’s rather atypical, and a little austere! A curiosity worth seeing! Add to that the manor’s proximity to the sea, and you’ve got some great walking opportunities!

Last but not least, Glenarm Castle was used as a location for the film Five Minutes of Heaven, starring Liam Neeson and James Nesbitt.
