Holy Cross Church is a Catholic church in Kenmare, founded in 1864. Pretty, if a little sad, it is the pride of the town’s inhabitants, who appreciate above all its interior architecture, with its choir, organ and sculpted roof!
Although austere, Kenmare’s church is above all renowned for its fine architecture and decoration. Starting with its stained-glass windows: the building boasts stunning colored stained-glass windows by artist London O’Connor. There’s also a hand-carved choir, an impressive organ, and an entirely hand-carved wooden roof. It’s a fine piece of work, and a fine example of Irish craftsmanship!
Opposite the church is the tomb of Mgr PF Cremin, who died in 2001 and was a Vatican theological expert. A native of Kenmare, he was professor of law and moral theology at St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, between 1949 and 1980.
The church is still in use today, and is happy to open its doors to tourists… as long as they’re discreet!
