Visit Innisfallen Island

A quiet, deserted island

The island of Innisfallen is a true haven of peace. Cut off from the rest of the world, it has many woods, where you may come across a few deer and other wild animals… Don’t worry, they’re wild and very shy, so there’s nothing to fear… They do, however, add a romantic, bucolic touch to the island, which has managed to remain a protected natural area!

Ideal for a short walk, Innisfallen Island takes you into the heart of exceptional wilderness, to the shores of Lough Leane, and to the magnificent ruins of Innisfallen Abbey. Founded in 640 by Saint Finian, this now ruined monastery would have been one of the most important religious and cultural centers in the Kerry region. Occupied for 850 years, it was the place where the famous Irish king Brian Boru was educated (while the abbey was run by Maelsuthain O’Carroll). But the abbey was also the place where the “Annals of the Four Masters” were written, a famous manuscript recounting the daily life of ancient Ireland…

However, the monks were expelled from the monastery on August 18, 1594 by Queen Elizabeth I, leaving it abandoned, subject to wear and tear and the passage of time…

To get to the island, shuttle buses depart from Ross Castle in summer. The round trip costs less than €7 per person. Don’t hesitate to pack a picnic lunch on the island: the silence and beauty of the surroundings are well worth a meal in the great outdoors! (Be careful not to leave anything behind).
