Knocknarea Mountain(Cnoc na Rí in Irish Gaelic) is a mountain located on the Coolrea Peninsula. Reaching up to 327 meters in altitude, this mountain is famous for hosting an imposing cairn on its summit, famous for being the tomb of Queen Medb.

Walkers will be delighted: Knockrea Mountain has an easy circuit that can be completed in less than three-quarters of an hour by walkers of all levels.

You can park in the parking lot below, before starting your ascent.

After a moderately steep ascent, you’ll discover the tomb of Queen Medb, a character from Irish mythology known for her authority, courage and ambition. It’s a cairn overlooking the Coolrea peninsula, similar in size to Newgrange (55 metres in diameter and 10 metres high). Over 40,000 tonnes of stone were used to build the tomb.

According to legend, the queen was buried here standing, facing north, towards Ulster and her enemies.
