Visit Lough Derg

A major nautical base

Lough Derg flows through three counties: County Tipperary, County Galway and County Clare, where it empties into the Shannon. Covering an area of over 118km², the lake reaches a maximum depth of 150 meters in places.

In the 19th century, the lake was one of the most important waterways, linking Limerick to Dublin (with over 40km of navigable stretch!). Nowadays, it’s a highly touristic lake, appreciated for its nautical activities, as well as for its fishing spots, much appreciated by amateurs.

What’s more, the lake is bordered by numerous small villages with a plethora of B&Bs, hotels, pubs and restaurants. They include Ballina, Killaloe, Mountshannon, Portumna and Dromineer. All the ingredients you need for a great stay on Lough Derg!
