McSwyne’s Gun is an astonishing air hole dug into the rock. Located on the Horn Head Peninsula (Co. Donegal) in Ireland, this 13-metre-long hole has the capacity to be sometimes invaded by impressive waves coming from below. It gives the impression of a natural geyser. This unique spot is a must-see!
It’s a rather unusual place that attracts thousands of curious visitors every year. Everyone wants to see McSwyne’s Gun, and see it shoot water into the air. It has to be said that the water column can sometimes be projected several meters above the hole, especially in stormy weather.
Because it’s when the ocean is rough that the waves are most violent… and most likely to pass through the hole in McSwyne’s Gun.
It should be noted, however, that the site was once far more impressive than it is today. In 1908, this “geyser” was between 60 and 90 metres high. When the water invaded, the noise was so brutal that it could be heard over 10 kilometers away!
To get there, you’ll have to go to Lakerommy, near Pollaguill Bay. You can park nearby and walk to the site.
Warning: we recommend that you do not get too close to the hole. The site deplores a number of unfortunate fatalities: the unwary have ventured too close and fallen to their deaths directly into the fissure. Keep your distance: you never know when the column might be flooded… and the sometimes violent wind could knock you off your feet.
Not far from McSwyne’s Gun are two other small geysers of the same type, but much more reasonable: the “Two Pistols”.
