Powerscourt House is a superb Irish manor house built near the village of Enniskerry in County Wicklow, Ireland. Set in the heart of the Irish countryside, it’s one of the region’s coolest tourist spots, and has the added advantage of being just 20 km south of Dublin! A good excuse to take a look!
Powerscourt Manor covers an area of over 19 hectares. The building was originally an imposing 13th-century castle, extensively modified between 1731 and 1741 by German architect Richard Cassels. (Hence the strong Germanic influence on its architecture!)
Unfortunately, the château was partially destroyed by a terrible fire in 1974. Since then, its owners (the Slazenger family) undertook a major restoration project in 1996, to bring the manor back to its 18th-century glory. However, a golf course has also been added, as well as a number of establishments, including the Avoca Handweavers textile factory and a luxury hotel.
You can visit the manor house and its gardens, where you’ll discover period furnishings and the luxurious ambience of the manor house. Finally, you can also discover Powerscourt Waterfall, a waterfall located on the manor’s property: it’s well worth a visit!
