Sky Road is a 10-kilometer circuit divided into 3 distinct sections: Beach Road, Low Road and Sky Road.
As the miles go by, you’ll gain in altitude, winding your way along winding roads that will ultimately take you over an unrivalled, wild panorama.
You can start your visit in Clifden, to admire its magnificent bay. The road then climbs to the heights of the mountains, and weaves through the heather to give breathtaking views of the ocean, Inishbofin, and other small islands dotting the horizon here and there.
Whatever the weather, be it sunny or overcast or rainy, you’ll be simply enchanted by the amazing colors and contrasts between sky, land and ocean.
Don’t be surprised if you come across a few sheep grazing peacefully in the surrounding fields: on Sky Road, most sheep roam in total freedom! So watch your driving… It would be a shame to bump into one of his woolly pets!
Beware of the road: it’s narrow in places, and doesn’t always allow 2 cars to pass at the same time in both directions. In fact, the road twists and turns for most of the way, giving you every opportunity to discover the terrible reputation of Irish roads. So be careful, and avoid excessive speeds.
If you’re on foot, prefer the Sky Road Lower (a small loop starting from Beach Road, in Clifden). The trails are well adapted and the views are breathtaking!
