Slyne Head is an impressive Irish lighthouse located off the coast of County Galway. Built in 1836, 12 kilometers south of Doolaughan, the lighthouse is particularly recognizable with its black-painted column. Set on a sheer rock, facing the violent ocean, it offers an exceptional spectacle!
Slyne Head lighthouse is currently managed by the Commissioners of Irish Lights (CIL). Still in operation today, the lighthouse has been fully automated and still guides ships approaching the Irish coast.
The lighthouse is set in magnificent surroundings, on a rocky promontory exposed to the winds and storms of the sea. Magnificent, it is especially admirable during heavy storms, but will unfortunately be inaccessible and too dangerous to approach due to the nearby reefs. Choose a calm day: some local boat companies will take you out to meet her by sea: a unique experience that should delight you! An hour’s ride costs between €15 and €20.
Don’t hesitate to cover up: the wind and humidity are particularly strong there!
Please note, however, that access to the lighthouse itself is forbidden, so you can’t visit it from the inside and enjoy a guided tour… But rest assured, your efforts will be amply rewarded by the beauty of the surroundings! The lighthouse is imposing and silent, and possesses a serious charm in the midst of these ocean-torn landscapes! A must-see!
