The Smithfield Horse Fair is a monthly horse show in Dublin. It takes place in the Smithfield district, on the main square (near Smithfield Plaza). The concept of this fair is simple: gather around a passion for horses, and buy and sell large-breed mounts on the spot.
The fair has the merit of being comical: while Smithfield is a district in the throes of modernization and urbanization, it hosts an impressive fair every 1st Sunday of the month, bringing together up to fifty horses! The event gives you the chance to meet breeders from the Dublin region, discover the greatest breeds of Irish horses (including the famous Connemara horse, or the Irish cob), and buy them at a good price if you wish.
Here, all types of horses come together: from draught horses to horses trained for horse racing (which the Irish are very keen on!), you’ll be spoilt for choice!
Generally speaking, the fair is a nice, friendly affair: the atmosphere is good, provided you like horses and riding, and aren’t too bothered by the smell of dung!
The fair reminds Dubliners of their proximity to the Irish countryside and their rural past. A great way to bring urban planning and rural life together in one place!
Access is free of charge, and should delight enthusiasts!
