The Caha Pass is a main road linking Kenmare and Glengarriff. This is the route of the famous “Ring of Beara”, a circuit that explores the length and breadth of the Beara Peninsula (Co. Cork). Very popular with travellers, this route offers incredible views of the great Irish wilderness. It winds its way along the peaks, offering breathtaking panoramas of Bantry Bay and Glengarriff. A must-do route, taking care to stop at the various viewpoints to enjoy the spectacle even more.

Caha Pass lies along the N71. Straddling 2 counties (Co. Cork and Co. Kerry), this route crosses the Beara Peninsula, offering some of the finest panoramic views. Lovers of wide open spaces and wild nature will appreciate the countless mountains (part of the Caha range), lakes (such as Glanmore lake) and coastal views.
The relief is sometimes vertiginous. And the road itself quickly becomes spectacular, with tunnels cut right through the mountains! A real pleasure to drive under!
It’s worth noting that the landscapes never look the same: they change with the light, the sun, the rain or the wind, taking on sometimes serious, sometimes lighter tones. The colors are magnificent, changing in an instant from bright green to brown for the mountains, from deep blue to gray for the lakes, and the beaches add a nice summer touch!
Sometimes the mist adds an even more authentic atmosphere, and it’s even better when the sun beams down on the clouds and mountains!
The perfect camera for every occasion!
Good to know: the road can be quite popular in summer. So choose a period or time when the circuit is less crowded: you’ll gain in peace and quiet, and the beauty of the surroundings will be all the more delightful! (focus on mornings, excluding weekends).
Note that the road is in fairly good condition, although there are a few narrower stretches that will require you to be on your guard (watch out for the rather bulky buses). Note that sheep like to annoy tourists by standing in the middle of the road: be patient: it’s part of the charm of Irish roads!)
