Fastnet Rockis a tiny, rocky island in southern Ireland. Topped by a magnificent lighthouse, the island seems lost in the middle of nowhere, and offers an incredible landscape. It’s hard to believe that a lighthouse could have been built there!
Fastnet Rock
Fastnet Rock rises just 30 metres above sea level. It’s mostly rock, slate, quartz and clay (which is why you won’t find much vegetation). Its surroundings are mainly made up of steep reefs, making it difficult to approach. (The island has also seen many boats run aground around its perimeter in the past).
The island has only one man-made building: the lighthouse, which is also a strategic point in the“Fastnet Race“, a popular sailing race for maritime enthusiasts. Impossible to miss with its dazzling whiteness, it’s the highest point on the island!
Generally speaking, Fastnet Rock can only be visited by boat: it’s dangerous to dock there, and the view is much nicer from the sea than from the island.
