If you like nature walks in national parks, don’t miss “The Lakeside Walk” in Glenveah National Park, County Donegal. The 3.5km circuit takes you along the shores of Lough Veagh to Glenveagh Castle. A lovely, easy, family-friendly walk that takes in some of Ireland’s most beautiful scenery!
There’s nothing quite like hiking through typically Irish landscapes! Glenveagh National Park is full of possibilities! And among the easiest hikes is the “Promenade du lac”.
It starts right next to the Park’s Visitor Centre, at the bus stop, and ends in the gardens of Glenveagh Castle.
The signposted trail is very simple: no changes in altitude, no rough terrain… Just follow the arrows!
The walk takes you through a birch forest, over a small bridge and across an expanse of moorland, with its heather, small animals and breathtaking views of the park’s surroundings.
Note that sneakers are sufficient, but good walking shoes could save you from damaging them in mud puddles. But don’t forget a small rucksack, windbreaker, snack and water: the bare minimum for this type of hike!
Don’t hesitate to visit the Visitor Centre beforehand to consult the tour and ask for any information you may need from the staff there.
And don’t forget to round off your walk with a visit to Glenveagh Castle and its wooded gardens. This castle is the highlight of the park! Built between 1870 and 1873, the castle is a stunning example of the eclectic style, blending elements of the Scottish Renaissance and Baronial styles.
Don’t miss its interior, with richly decorated rooms that reflect the luxury and refinement of the Victorian era. Visitors can discover sumptuous lounges, an elegant dining room, an impressive library and much more on guided tours!
