Opened in 2017, the Medieval Mile Museum is a brand new museum in Kilkenny, Ireland. It boasts a rather attractive collection, which will tell you more about the city’s history and its important archaeological heritage.
Its collection focuses primarily on the medieval period, and the many remains that have been discovered around the town.

The Medieval Mile Museum is a brand-new museum built on the tourist site of the 13th-century church of St Mary. The museum, though small, boasts over 800 years of Irish history.
The latter has been integrated into the ruined church. That’s why you’ll not only be able to admire a lovely exhibition, but also the churchyard, the site’s medieval sculptures, a collection of Irish tombs dating from the Renaissance…etc. And don’t miss a visit to the Rothe Chapel, a magnificently ornate medieval chapel on site, once owned by the wealthy Rothe merchant family.
Among the museum’s other treasures, don’t miss the churchyard, where only the wealthiest could be buried: many magnificent Celtic crosses (including one 4 meters high!), and Stories for each tomb will be on the program for your visit.
Glass floors also reveal some of Kilkenny’s medieval foundations, including a tall tower that once overlooked the town.
The museum can be visited on its own with an audio-guide (headphones on and explanations in French, with a version available for children), or accompanied by a guide (the museum has a passionate French guide named Hugues, who will enthusiastically pass on his knowledge of Kilkenny’s history).
The Medieval Mile Museum is rather well structured and organized. The collection is dense, well-stocked and rather well-presented. Lots of interactive screens, lots of interaction, and the exhibition should even appeal to children!
