The Poisoned Glen is an Irish valley close to Glenveagh National Park in County Donegal. It’s surrounded by the Derryveagh Mountains, a magnificent range of mountains particularly popular with walkers.
The Poisoned Glen is a valley accessible via the park, with a map or GPS. You can link up with the R521, but the R524 is the easiest access. The valley lies at the foot of Errigal Mountain (a magnificent rocky mountain) and Dunlewey Church (a ruined church of surprising and enigmatic beauty).
The valley can only be explored on foot, and requires good hiking boots (some parts are quite muddy), as well as the obligatory minimum for walking (rucksack, windbreaker, food, water and all the rest). The setting is superb, immensely green and silent. A perfect valley for a change of scenery, with majestic mountains that will blow you away.
Don’t hesitate to wander the length and breadth of it: the Poisoned Glen’s desert-like appearance will take you back to the days of the Irish Gaelic clans, when people wore kilts and ventured freely into the wild Irish valleys. Your mind will be filled with images, and miles of lush green moorland await you!
