Fancy a little 100% Irish break in the village of Allihies (Co. Cork)? We’ve got just what you need. It’s impossible to miss O’Neill’s, one of the village’s most popular Irish pubs, with its unmistakable bright red frontage. Let’s face it, it’s the best place to relax, have a pint and enjoy the best of the local gastronomy!
The O’Neill’s pub has an international reputation, as its storefront has been reproduced in photos and posters. It has to be said that the establishment is a perfect example of a traditional Irish pub, as much for its frontage and old-school lettering as for the warmth of its welcome, the charm of its peat fire and the quality of its drinks and good food.
The O’Neills is also a great place to hear local bands perform Irish classics.
Once you’ve ordered at the counter, you’re hooked: the pub is cosy, pleasant and unpretentious. You’ll find yourself chatting to a neighboring table, ordering fish and chips as crisp as they are delicious, and singing along to tunes you’d never heard an hour before. The deco also provides an opportunity to learn more about Allihies’ mining history, strongly marked by its former copper mining activities during the 19th century. Many old photos and objects are on display, to make your experience even more authentic.
Big plus: the pub also has a terrace, which is very pleasant to eat on hot days. Perfect for summer eating and sunbathing!
As for prices, the pub is reasonably priced, with menus starting at €19.95. It’s a real treat, and the service is fast, even when it’s busy.
Beware, however, in summer, when O’Neill’s can sometimes fall victim to its own success. The pub is right on the route of the Ring of Beara: a tour that explores the Beara Peninsula. It’s well worth the detour!
