Cillian Murphy

Cillian Murphy was born on May 25, 1976 in Douglas, Ireland. He was raised in Ballintemple, a small village on the outskirts of Cork.

His father worked for the Ministry of Education and his mother was a French teacher.

He was quickly raised religious, and attended Catholic schools. He soon discovered a turbulent and creative temperament, and developed a passion for music and acting.

However, Cillian Murphy first studied law at Cork University, before moving into acting and film.

He was then noticed for his role in the zombie movie “28 Days Later”, which brought him his first success. His atypical face, his presence and his charisma make him a rather fascinating actor, capable of playing on all registers.

He then went on to play small roles in major productions such as Return to Cold Mountain, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight…

Time for the leading roles

Le Vent se lève

But it was Ken Loach’s film“Le Vent se Lève” (The Wind is Raising) that won him acclaim for his leading role. He plays the role of an Irish doctor, who unwillingly plunges into the heart of Ireland’s historical conflict: the Irish War of Independence, then its civil war in the 1920s. His performance is remarkable and poignant.

At the time, he was being hailed as a rising star not only in Irish cinema, but also in Hollywood.

Danny Boyle then invited him to star in his film Sunshine, which catapulted him to international stardom.

In 2010, Christopher Nolan called on him for the film Inception, in which he starred alongside Leonardo Dicaprio… Cillian Murphy now has an international career and enjoys playing the Hollywood card…

The success of Peaky Blinders

Cillian Murphy plays the famous Thomas Shelby

But the actor likes to think outside the box, and in 2013 joined the Peaky Blinders series project. He plays the lead role of Thomas Shelby, the leader of a gang of Irish travelers living in Birmingham, England.

The story unfolds over 6 seasons, recounting the gang’s impossible crimes and larcenies, their guerrilla warfare, power struggles and betrayals of all kinds. A role that allows Cillian Murphy to explore his character over more than 6 years… And the result was acclaimed by critics and viewers alike.

The series quickly became an event: each season was eagerly awaited and reached audiences never before seen on Netflix!

Despite this success, the Irish actor continued his film career in parallel.

At the same time, he took on a series of roles in which he stood out: Joseph Kosinski’s Tron l’Héritage, Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk….

Its choices are varied and eclectic. He alternates between blockbusters and auteur films, often returning to his Irish roots.
