Fungie the dolphin, liked to do antics in Dingle Bay
Dingle, a charming coastal town on Ireland’s southwest coast, has always been a popular destination for tourists seeking breathtaking scenery and a glimpse of Ireland’s rich cultural heritage. However, it’s Fungie, the resident bottlenose dolphin, who has stolen the show in the village for years, and captured the hearts of all who have met him!
It all began in the early 1980s, when a bottlenose dolphin was first spotted in the waters around Dingle Bay. It is thought that he was separated from his group at a young age, forcing him to make his home in the village waters.
With its charismatic personality and inquisitive nature, the dolphin quickly attracts the attention of local fishermen and boaters. He loves playing with boats and interacting directly with people! The program includes antics, jumping in the air, tail snapping on the surface of the water, and repeated high-pitched cries… It’s all about attracting attention and interacting with people!
Its behavior is so atypical that it is beginning to earn a reputation among local fishermen and yachtsmen alike.
His reputation quickly spread. In Dingle, everyone knows the story of this wild dolphin, who loves to socialize with humans!
So much so that a name was given to it: Fungie, because of its playfulness and mischievousness.
From then on, Fungie became an unexpected tourist ambassador for the village. Many tourists travel to Dingle specifically to meet the dolphin!
Several tourist companies organize regular boat excursions, with the promise of a potential encounter with the famous marine mammal! Dingle quickly became a magnet not only for its surroundings, but also for Fungie!
A phenomenon that has enabled local businesses to prosper thanks to him. Dolphin-watching excursions, souvenir stores, cafés… the locals have not hesitated to play the attractive tourism card!

Sadly, after more than 40 years in Dingle Bay, Fungie sadly disappeared in October 2020. His loss caused a real stir in the village, but also among the thousands of visitors who had the chance to meet him.
A tragic loss, which led to intensive search campaigns before the village finally realized the obvious: Fungie had disappeared for good.
Marked by grief, Dingle decided to create a monument to Fungie. The latter stands on the port: a copper statue of him bears a commemorative plaque. It’s enough to make this dolphin unforgettable, even if the waters of Dingle Bay have been empty since his death…
