The Irish cap is depicted all over the place in old historical illustrations, and it would seem that the Irish cap has been the preserve of peasants for many centuries! Entirely handmade, it is above all a handcrafted object made from the tweed then produced in Ireland, at Ardara in County Donegal.
The Irish often like to buy them to “break” the visor and give them a shape they like. They then wear it in their own way, rain or shine, and don’t leave it for years. The quality of the tweed is such that the cap quickly becomes an absolutely indestructible object. It takes more than a decade!
If you’re ever tempted to buy an Irish cap, you’ll find them just about everywhere in Ireland, and mainly in stores specializing in local handicrafts. There is, however, one town that specializes in making this type of cap: Ardara (Co. Donegal), which in Ireland is known as the tweed capital of Ireland!
You’ll easily find them in any other shop selling traditional clothing, such as Irish sweaters or thick Aran wool scarves.
As for price, expect to pay between €60 and €90 for a well-made cap. Try it on for size!
