Warning: if you don’t know what onion rings are, you might just be hooked! It’s a typically Anglo-Saxon speciality that the Irish are crazy about! Served in most of the country’s fast-food outlets, but also in Ireland’s Irish Pubs, onion rings are onions fried in a doughnut-like batter… Shaped like a circle, they are eaten with the fingers, and are generally dipped in a sauce… A bit high in calories, but let’s face it: it’s a DE-LI-CE! !
Onion rings – Ireland Guide.com
Onion rings are usually circular in shape, and are eaten with a little ketchup or spicy sauce. Considered a sort of hors d’oeuvre or starter, the Irish usually nibble it as an aperitif, with a pint of beer…
Very economical, they generally cost less than €2/3 a dozen, and are appreciated for their crispiness, and the slight acidity of the onion.
Note that many supermarkets also sell them in sachets, but fresh onion rings are often much better! The same goes for Irish fast food outlets (mainly Burger King and Supermac’s), as well as many fish and chip shops!
Taste it at least once in your life: it’s worth the detour!
Although a little greasy, it’s a good opportunity to ease your guilt afterwards by following it up with an afternoon exploring Ireland: you can say goodbye to the calories!
