Introducing Bangers and Mash

A Typical Irish Pub Dish

Bangers and Mash belong to the so-called “Pub Grub” family, i.e. dishes served mainly in Irish Pubs.

In fact, it’s one of the signature dishes served in most pubs (along with Irish Stew and Fish and Chips). This dish costs an average of €7-8 per person, and is traditionally served with a base of 3 sausages and creamy mashed potatoes. Don’t be surprised if this dish is very high in fat and potatoes: the Irish are adept at rich dishes that settle quickly, and their love of the potato is centuries-old!

Serve with a good pint of stout, and you’re ready to enjoy this simple but delicious dish!

Very popular with the Irish, Bangers and Mash has the advantage of being a nourishing dish that suits small budgets. Also, expect to pay around €6-7 per person if you wish to have it served in a pub. (If you’d like to do it at home, the price will be even lower!)

Traditionally, Bangers and Mash uses :

  • sausages (pork, beef or other)
  • potatoes
  • onions
  • a tomato or carrot

Of course, there are also variations based on exotic sausages (a little more expensive than traditional sausages), or on vegetables (carrots, tomatoes, zucchinis, etc.). Also, the Irish often like to season their dishes with vinegar (the Irish like to combine the taste of potatoes with the acidity of vinegar): the taste is striking!
