Spotted Dog is an Irish specialty halfway between a loaf of bread and a cake. Made from raisins, it can be eaten for breakfast or as a snack, on toast with a little butter. Delicious grilled!
A taste of Spotted Dog
A scone-like cake
The Spotted Dog is generally made on the basis of a soda farl. Delicious, with some similarities to scones and a slightly brioche-like texture, flavored with raisins. This cake is usually found in good patisseries, but is mostly made in Irish homes, with the family.
Note that Spotted Dog doesn’t keep very long: don’t hesitate to eat it quickly, as it keeps for no more than 3 days. Don’t hesitate to eat it grilled on the second day.

Ingredients
- 450g flour
- 100g raisins
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg
- 1/2 liter buttermilk
Preparation
- Preheat oven to 230°C
- Mix the flour, baking soda, 2 tablespoons sugar and raisins in a bowl.
- Add 2/3 of the milk, the egg and knead until you obtain a homogeneous dough.
- Knead to make it light and supple, and shape into a loaf less than 5cm thick.
- Brush the top with the remaining milk and sprinkle with a tablespoon of sugar.
- Score the top with a knife
- Place in the oven. After 5 minutes, turn the oven down to 200°C and bake for 25 minutes.
- Take the bread and tap the base: if it sounds hollow, it’s perfectly cooked. If not, put it back in the oven for about 5 minutes, then check again.
