Irish prehistory can only be studied as such from around 8,000 years ago. Before that, due to the Ice Age, sea levels were much lower, with the result that Ireland was attached to England, and England to the continent. The ice gradually retreated, and by 6000 BC, Ireland found itself cut off from England by the rising waters. From Scandinavia, populations of men living from hunting and fishing crossed Britain towards the high plateaus of Wicklow and Antrim.
