After playing stages around the world, U2 has a new arena to conquer: collectors’ albums. Ireland has dedicated a commemorative €2 coin to the Dublin band to mark its fiftieth anniversary. It may be a small object, but it is an official tribute to a musical story that has become inseparable from the country.
A U2 coin to celebrate fifty years of music
The four musicians together in one design
The Central Bank of Ireland unveiled the coin on 25 September 2026. Designed by Shaughn McGrath, it features Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. The drummer attended the launch at the Little Museum of Dublin.
The choice of venue gives this tribute a distinctly Dublin character. For anyone discovering the capital, U2 is as much a part of its identity as its Georgian façades and musical evenings. This time, the memento takes the form of a coin to keep rather than a concert poster.
A story that began at a Dublin school
In 1976, Larry Mullen Jr. was looking for musicians through a notice posted at Mount Temple Comprehensive School. Fifty years later, all four members appear on the same coin: a singular way of measuring how far they have come since those early days.
How much does the U2 €2 coin cost?
Two editions for collectors
The €2 face value does not reflect the selling price. At launch, the Central Bank announced a “Brilliant Uncirculated” edition, presented on a card, at €14.95, with 150,000 copies available. A “Proof” edition, with a more elaborate finish and presented in a booklet, was offered at €39.95, with 5,000 copies available.
Check availability before ordering
Official sales are handled through CollectorCoins.ie. These editions are designed for collectors, so it is best to check the official shop rather than rely on receiving one in your change during a stay. Stock levels and any delivery charges should be checked at the time of purchase.
