Adare is a village in County Limerick. It’s known as the most beautiful village in Ireland, although most people call it “the English village”, because it’s so reminiscent of small villages in Britain, with its thatched houses and cosy gardens.
For many centuries, Adare was under the ownership of the Irish Fitzgerald clan, until the Irish rebellions. The village only took on its current appearance in the 19th century, when the Earls Duraven decided to restore Adare.
The work took over 20 years, from 1820 to 1840. They rebuilt the houses, opting for long streets and alternating slate and thatch roofs. The facades are colorful, and the gardens beautifully planted with trees.
Today, the village has preserved its original character, and has become one of the region’s most beautiful villages.
