County Monaghan extends across the north-east of the Republic of Ireland, along the border with Northern Ireland. Its landscape of drumlins, small lakes and farmland forms a discreet inland region, deeply shaped by its border location.
Monaghan had a population of 65,288 in the 2022 census. Monaghan Town is its main centre, while Carrickmacross, Castleblayney and Clones serve other parts of the county.
The gently rolling terrain is one of the county’s defining landscape features. Small lakes, hedgerows, pastures and back roads create a geography very different from mountainous or coastal regions.
Monaghan has a significant rural, religious and craft heritage. Carrickmacross is particularly associated with a lace-making tradition.
One or two days are enough to explore Monaghan Town, Carrickmacross or Castleblayney, as well as the surrounding countryside. A car remains the best way to explore this dispersed area.
