One of Youghal's curiosities is a Dutch manor house known as the "Red House". Built in 1710, the building boasts remarkable architecture, with its inner courtyard and red-brick, Baroque-style house.

Youghal

Youghal (Eochaill in Irish Gaelic, but pronounced “Yawl” in English) is a small Irish coastal village in County Cork. This small fortified town is known for its lively harbor, shops, restaurants and pubs.

History of Youghal

A town marked by the English presence

By the 16th century, Youghal had become an important economic centre for Ireland. Its ideal location near the Blackwater estuary made it a magnet for the English army and local merchants alike.

Elizabeth I soon ceded the town to Sir Walter Raleigh, before selling it to the Earl of Cork. With Cromwell’s arrival, Youghal was invaded by English Protestant garrisons, and tensions between Irish and English became electric. The occupation claimed many victims, and the violence and massacres plunged Youghal into turmoil…

Today, the town has a population of over 6,200, and has retained its charm despite its painful history, marked by English occupation.
