In Ireland, the ocean and the sea are omnipresent… and the locals understand just how precious the natural resources of their coastline are! Starting with seaweed, which, when used properly, has incredible benefits! If you’re interested in this subject, we recommend a visit to Atlantic Irish Seaweed in Derrynane (Co. Kerry). This establishment offers workshops to help you discover Irish seaweed, its benefits and how to use it. Fascinating!
Atlantic Irish Seaweed is run by a particularly welcoming couple: John and Kerryann, both passionate about nature and the ocean. These offer original activities all centered around the sea, its resources and respect for biodiversity.
They offer a complete tour that starts at their Caherdaniel facility. It all starts with a cup of seaweed-infused tea… accompanied by a few snacks of sea vegetables.
You’ll then be invited to head for the shore for a short guided walk at low tide. The aim: to find several varieties of seaweed typical of the Irish coastline. Some can be eaten fresh from the rocks, while others require further processing before they can be tasted. A unique experience!
Back at the resort, a tasting lunch featuring a wide range of seaweed dishes will be enjoyed with “living” drinks such as kefirs and kombuchas made from seaweed and fruit.
There’s plenty to enjoy, while also discovering products made by the couple, such as seaweed bath sachets… or cutlery with handles made from stabilized seaweed: kelp. Quality products that never alter the product!
The visit is fascinating: far from being a simple lecture, it’s an opportunity to learn and experiment: you can taste, smell and walk with your feet in the water. Discover the incredible richness of Ireland’s marine ecosystem and the virtues of its seaweed and other plants… It’s enough to make you want to go seaweed fishing on your own, just like the experts!
A word of advice: dress warmly. Kerry’s weather can change quickly, so bring a windbreaker, boots and a good sweater.
