Ballinalacken Castle is an Irish fortified tower, built between the 15th and 16th centuries on the Lisdoonvarna road leading to Fanore. Set on a promontory overlooking the Irish countryside, the castle is sublime with its ruins, which give it a very authentic charm!
Situated on the grounds of a larger castle dating from 1840 (the Ballinalacken Castle Hotel), Ballinalacken Castle was successively the tower of the O’Connor and O’Brien families. After several constructions and improvements, the fortress passed through the hands of many generations, suffering the ravages of time and Anglo-Irish conflicts.
It was finally abandoned at the end of the 17th century, and is now a listed monument.
Unfortunately, access is forbidden. However, from the outside, the castle is a beautiful sight, rich in charm and legend… Built over 4 storeys, the tower is arranged on 2 levels (one higher, one lower), which at the time enabled effective surveillance of the surrounding area.
The narrow loopholes seem to have difficulty letting in light, and inside you’ll discover traces of former chimneys and staircases that are now impassable.
It’s a magnificent location, set in a green, picturesque setting worthy of the finest Irish postcards.
