The Ballybunion Castle is around 12 metres high and towers several dozen metres above the village beach. Impossible to miss, it is the pride of the local inhabitants of Ballybunion!
It was built in the 1500s by the Fitzmaurices family. Only a few sections of the walls have survived to the present day, but we’re not going to deny ourselves the pleasure of admiring it from the top of its rocky promontory. The château’s location gives it a majestic charm.
You’ll have the chance to visit it, and appreciate all its mystery. It’s worth noting that an underground gallery, dug right into the cliff face, has been discovered: in the past, it provided an unobtrusive link to the castle. Unfortunately, the underground has collapsed, making it impossible to use.
