It’s time to dive headfirst into Irish history! The Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre is a museum entirely dedicated to one of the country’s most important historical events: the Battle of the Boyne in 1690!
The Visitor Centre takes you back in time to the scene of one of the bloodiest battles in Irish history. You’ll discover how the battlefield pitted 2 kings against each other: William (a Protestant backed by 36,000 men), and James (a Catholic backed by 25,000 men).
For specialists, this was the battle in which a record number of troops were deployed! The Protestants were made up of English, Scots, Dutch, Danish and Huguenots (French), while King James’ men were essentially Irish and French (the latter sent by King Louis XIV).
The stakes were high: the British throne was at stake, as was the religion established by the incumbent king.
The museum will show you the violence of the confrontation, the military tactics used and the terrible death toll of the battle (over 1,500 soldiers). All this, thanks to life-size reconstructions, with countless actors and horses, not to mention their antique cannons: enough to enthral even the youngest!
