Blackrock Castle was built at the request of the citizens of Cork to Queen Elizabeth I. The latter wanted a castle to watch over the town, and protect them from any assailants (dangerous pirates in search of wealth and plunder) who might come ashore via the port.
Magnificent, the château was long used for town banquets and official events until 1827, when it was ravaged by a terrible fire. The château was rebuilt in 1828 and 1829, adding 3 floors to the original tower.
It was only bought by the Cork Corporation in 2001, and transformed into a space observation center thanks to a partnership with Cork City Council, the Cork Institute of Technology and private sponsorship.
The Blackrock Castle Observatory now welcomes the general public to talk about space, the universe, the stars and even extraterrestrial life! And with a host of high-tech touch-screen terminals, videos, telescopes and other tools for observing the sky. A way to reconcile past, present and future!
